General Information
The Washington Area Women's Soccer League (WAWSL) offers 11v11 women's outdoor soccer during the spring and fall, as well as a smaller 7v7 league during the summer. The spring season runs from late March through mid-June, skipping Memorial Day weekend. The fall season runs from late August through mid-November, skipping Labor Day weekend. During the spring and fall season, we play almost exclusively on Saturdays with occasional weeknight games. The summer season games are on weeknights. Our fields are located in DC and nearby suburbs. WAWSL is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and is also affiliated with the state and national soccer associations.
About 35-40 teams participate in the league and are divided into several divisions:
- Premier Division - for players of high competitive ability; generally, ex-college players. Many Premier Division teams compete in national tournaments.
- First Division - for players of competitive ability; many have played high school and/or college soccer. Many First Division teams compete in regional tournaments.
- Second Division - for competitive players. Most women have played high school soccer.
- Third Division - for recreational players. Some women have played as youths, and some players are playing soccer for the first time.
- Masters 1 - for experienced players age 30 or older. Most women have played soccer for many years, and some are dual-registered in the Premier or First divisions.
- Masters 2 - for recreational players age 30 or older. Some players have played their whole lives, some are returning to soccer after a long break, and some players are new to the sport.
